Persian Gulf War ''Operation Desert Storm'' The Persian Gulf War lasted from 1990 to 1991, but was only 6 weeks. It involved the U.S.A, Iraq, Kuwait, and the U.N. The war was due to Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein wanting control of Kuwait's oil supply. On August 2, 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, sparking the war. At the end of the war Kuwait's oil wells had been badly damaged. The U.N. placed an embargo on Iraq until they destroyed their nuclear weapons. Afghanistan War ''The War on Terror'' The Afghanistan War lasted from 2001 to 2014. It involved the U.S.A and Afghanistan. The U.S.A. went to war after the attacks on the World Trade Center. This was to capture Al-Qaeda or "The Force," the terrorists that planned and executed 9/11. The U.S.A was searching for Osama bin Laden, Al-Qaeda's leader. It was believed that the Taliban were protecting bin Laden from the U.S.A. At the end of war the Taliban were defeated. The US.A. created a new government for Afghanistan. It took 10 years to find bin Laden and during this time the Taliban rebuilt in Pakistan. In 2012, bin Laden was killed by U.S.A in Pakistan. Iraq War ''Operation Iraqi Freedom'' The Iraq War started in 2003 and is still going on today. It involved the U.S.A., Iraq, and Britain. It was caused by fear of Iraq's nuclear weapons and aiding groups like Al-Qaeda. Due to the war, Saddam Hussein was captured, tried, and finally executed on December 29, 2006 for the death of Iraqis during his leadership. A democratic government was established in Iraq; the 1st elections were in 2005. |
