Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia is a theocracy with an absolute monarchy. The king is the head of state and the head of government. He ratifies decrees and is chosen from the royal family. The king is advised by the Council of Ministers, who help carry out public policy and pass national legislation. The Consultative Council is the legislature. 2/3 is chosen by the king and 1/3 is elected by citizens 15 and up. Israel Israel is a parliamentary democracy. The prime minister is the head of government, head of the dominant political party, and must organize a coalition. The prime minister is appointed by the president. The president is the head of state, is elected by the Knesset, and has very little power. Israel's parliament is the Knesset. The Knesset has 120 members and holds most of the power. Citizens 18 and older vote for the Knesset. Iran Iran is a theocratic republic. The president is the head of government and serves up to two four-year terms. The president is approved by a special council, is the chief executive of the country, and can be removed by the Supreme Leader. The Supreme Leader is the head of state and the commander in chief; the Supreme Leader holds the position for life. The Supreme Leader has unlimited power and final say over the president's decisions. The Supreme Leader is supervised, and can be removed by, the Assembly of Experts. The Assembly of Experts also chooses the Supreme Leader. Iran's parliament is made of men and women. It deals with issues brought by the president. Citizens 15 and older vote for the Assembly of Experts, president, and parliament. |
